Software Overview

IrfanView is a simple image viewer available for Windows. It allows you to open a wide range of image files, create slideshows, and install plug-ins for additional functionality.

The default version of IrfanView supports many popular image formats, such as JPEG, PNG, Bitmap, and GIF. It can also play some audio and video files, including .WAV and .AVI files. If you want to open additional types of image, audio, and video files in IrfanView, you can do so by installing related plug-ins. (Many of the supported file types listed below are supported via plug-ins.)

In addition to its image viewing and audio and video playback capabilities, IrfanView allows you to create slideshows. The slideshow creation interface is easy to use, making it easy to add images, specify slide settings, add text, and loop music. When you are done, you can save your slideshow as an .EXE or .SCR file or burn it to a CD or DVD.

Summary

IrfanView is a lightweight image viewing program that supports a wide variety of image formats. It is also extensible, making it a good option for viewing obscure image formats via plug-ins. But unless you are looking to open an obscure image format, Windows has more capable image viewers, such as Windows' default image viewer, Microsoft Photos.
