About FileInfo.com

20 Years

FileInfo.com contains a searchable database of over 10,000 file extensions with detailed information about 13,000 file formats. Every day, thousands of visitors from around the world use FileInfo.com to look up information about unknown file types and find programs that open the files.

Since 2005, the FileInfo.com team has worked with developers, large and small, to create a central file extensions registry. FileInfo.com is the authoritative website where developers can submit new file extensions and provide information about file types. If you are a developer, you can easily register your file extensions with us.

Our Goal

We aim to make file format information easy to access and easy to understand.

The Minnesota-based FileInfo.com team has spent over 20 years building this database of file formats, each of which we have personally researched. Accuracy is foundational to our website, so we verify each file format we publish, including the file type information and the programs that open the file. Our verification process includes manually opening the files on our own systems and verifying the file format details with the corresponding software developer.

Software Programs

FileInfo.com also includes descriptions and reviews of hundreds of software programs. Visit the Software section to browse a list of applications. Each software page includes a review of the application, a list of program features, and a list of supported file types.

Using FileInfo.com

You can look up file extensions and software programs using the search box on the top of each page. For advanced queries, try the Advanced Search feature. If you have file-related questions, there is a good chance you'll find the answer in the Help Center. For example, you can learn more about file extensions and how they are used by reading the "What is a File Extension?" help article.
