What is a CPT file?

A CPT file is a bitmap image created by Corel PHOTO-PAINT, a photo editing program that is part of the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. It contains an image that supports layers, alpha channels, transparency, and other image effects. CPT files are used by amateur and professional photographers and graphic designers for storing touched-up photos.

The CPT file is the main file type associated with PHOTO-PAINT. When you save your image with PHOTO-PAINT, the application creates the CPT file, by default, to store the image and all the edits that have been applied. CPT files are similar to Adobe Photoshop .PSD files in this way. You can save a CPT file by selecting File → Save.

In addition to Corel PHOTO-PAINT, the following applications are included in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite:

  • CorelDRAW - A vector illustration and page layout program
  • Corel Font Manager - A font management program
  • CorelDRAW.app - An online vector illustration program accessible via web browser
  • Corel CAPTURE - A single-click screen capture utility (only available with Windows version)

How to open a CPT file

You can open a CPT file with the Corel PHOTO-PAINT application included with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite (Windows and macOS). You can edit and save CPT files with CorelDRAW, and export them to more widely supported image formats, such as .JPG, .PNG, .GIF, and .BMP. To export the CPT file select File → Export... and choose the format.

You can also open CPT files with Corel Presentations (Windows) and XnViewMP (multiplatform).
