A DIB file is a raster image saved in the Device-Independent Bitmap format. It is similar to a .BMP bitmap image but has different header information. DIB files may be compressed or uncompressed; most are uncompressed.
Microsoft developed the DIB format for use with the Windows and OS/2 (Operating System/2) operating systems. The format supports 1-, 4-, 8-, or 24-bit pixels for uncompressed images, and 4- or 8-bit pixels for RLE-compressed images. 24-bit DIB images use 8 bits for each RGB color.
How to open a DIB file
You can open a DIB file with most image viewers and editors, including Microsoft Photos (Windows), Apple Preview (Mac), XnViewMP (multiplatform), and Adobe Photoshop (Windows, Mac).
How to convert a DIB file
You can use Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or XnViewMP to convert DIB files to other image formats. For example, XnViewMP can convert DIB images to the following formats (and many others):
