An SRT file contains subtitle text and timing information in the SubRip file format, one of the most common formats for providing subtitles for videos, including those online. Many media players, including VideoLAN VLC media player and MPlayer, and online video-streaming sites, such as YouTube, support SRT subtitles. Users can also open and edit SRT files with subtitle and text editors since they store plain text.

Media players load each segment of an SRT file in order, showing each segment's text during the time that text is associated with. Timecodes in SRT files are written in the HH:MM:SS,MIL format. Thus, the first line of text shown above would appear on-screen at 3.004 seconds and disappear at 6.00177 seconds.
Display coordinates may appear after each segment's end timecode. If a segment contains no display coordinates, its text will appear in the bottom center of your display.

[moviename].eng.srt - Subtitle filenames often include a reference to the included subtitles' language. For example, an SRT file whose name includes .eng likely includes English subtitles, while an SRT file whose name includes .ger likely includes German subtitles.

You can open SRT files in several ways. The most common way is adding subtitles to videos in media players via SRT files. Examples of media players that support SRT files include:
- VideoLAN VLC media player (multiplatform)
- MPlayer (multiplatform)
- CyberLink PowerDVD (Windows)
For example, to use an SRT file as a subtitle track in VLC media player:
- Open VLC media player and begin playing the video you want to use your SRT file with.
- From the VLC Media Player menu bar, select .
- Navigate to and open your SRT file.
You can also open SRT files with a subtitle or text editor. For example, you can open and edit an SRT file with Aegisub or any text editor (including Microsoft Notepad or Apple TextEdit).
How to validate that SRT subtitles are formatted correctly
You can validate that the subtitles in an SRT file are formatted correctly by uploading the SRT file to Subtitle Validator online. To upload it, select the "Choose File" button and select the SRT file.
