Some of the sections include style, link, comment, and upload. TPL files also include symbols surrounded by percentage signs (%) used to define each section.

To open and edit TPL files in HFS, you must be in "Expert mode" in HFS. To enter expert mode, select Menu → Other options → Switch to Expert mode. Once in expert mode, select Menu again then choose HTML template → Edit... or Change file....

NOTE: Templates are typically stored in the same folder as the hfs.exe file.

A TPL file may also be a template used by Phorum, a PHP and MySQL-based open source message board system. It contains template code, which is mainly plain HTML mixed with Phorum custom template language that consists of simple statements. TPL files are used to display dynamic data generated by Phorum, such as search results, message information, and lists of private messages.

More Information

The template language found in TPL files consists of HTML and simple Phorum template statements. These statements support four data types, which may be integers, strings, PHP constants, or template variables. Since the template language is stored in TPL files as plain text, you can open and edit TPL files with any text editor.

Phorum typically uses TPL files for storing template code but may also use .PHP files if they are placed in the template directory and are named with the appropriate basename. For example, if Phorum is displaying the footer template, it first searches for footer.php in the template directory and if the file does not exist, will then look for footer.tpl. The inclusion of PHP files allows users to only use PHP/HTML code for templates if they do not want to use the Phorum template language required by TPL templates.

A TPL file may also be a template written in the Smarty 3 templating language, which is similar to HTML. It is used by PrestaShop e-commerce software to generate the HTML of a webpage to customize e-commerce-related pages visited by users, such as product, cart, and checkout pages.

More Information

PrestaShop is an open-source e-commerce solution that allows users to manage various e-commerce needs on their websites, such as product listings and payments. Users can customize these various facets through themes, which consist of TPL templates, and add-on modules provided by PrestaShop and third-party developers.

Users can download the software for free, then upload and install it to the web server hosting their website. Users are then able to create new TPL templates or modify pre-existing templates for their specific e-commerce needs.

For example, if you want different layouts for the same product page that change based on the country location of the user, you can create a new TPL template for the product page and place it in the appropriate directory. When a user in the specific location views that product, PrestaShop checks for that new product.tpl file, generates a webpage and returns it to the user, who views it in his web browser.

PrestaShop comes with the "Classic" theme pre-installed. This theme can be found in the "themes" folder in the PrestaShop installation. The "classic" theme folder includes the "assets," "modules," "plugins," and "templates" (stores the TPL files) subfolders. All TPL templates must be stored in the "templates" subfolder in the theme's folder. In this case, TPL templates for the "classic" theme are stored in the following directory:

/themes/classic/templates/

There are a large number of TPL templates included with each theme and they are organized into various subfolders in the templates folder. Some notable TPL files that can be found these subfolders include product.tpl (product page), product-list.tpl (product list page), cart.tpl (shopping cart details), and checkout.tpl (checkout purchase process).

How to open a TPL file

You can open TPL files with any text editor, since the files are saved in plain text format. However, you may want to use a source code editor that supports the Smarty 3 templating language or allows you to install a plugin that supports the language to provide helpful coding features.

You can open TPL files with Microsoft Visual Studio Code in Windows, macOS, or Linux. Then, you can install the free "Smarty" extension to add support for syntax highlighting and snippets in the Smarty 3 templating language.
