An SSA file contains subtitles written in the Sub Station Alpha subtitle format. It is used to show subtitles alongside an associated video. You can open and edit an SSA file in any text editor. You can use it as a subtitles track in VideoLAN VLC media player, MPlayer, and CyberLink PowerDVD.

Sub Station Alpha is a program that allows you to create custom subtitles for videos. For example, many English-speaking anime fans use Sub Station Alpha to create subtitles for non-dubbed anime.
Subtitles created using Sub Station Alpha are saved in the SSA format. Each SSA file is a plain text file that includes three sections:
- [Script Info]: Lists the video the SSA file is meant to be used with, the file's author, and other metadata
- [Styles]: Contains styling information used to set subtitles' font, color, etc.
- [Events]: Contains subtitle text and timing information
Some other subtitle-creation programs, such as Aegisub and Gnome Subtitles, also allow you to save subtitles in the SSA format. However, at this point, the .ASS (Aegisub Advanced SubStation Alpha) format has largely replaced the SSA format.

For example, to use an SSA file as a subtitle track in VLC media player:
- Open VLC and play the video with which you want to use your SSA file.
- From VLC's menu bar, select .
- Navigate to and open your SSA file.
To edit the subtitles an SSA file contains, open the file in Aegisub (multiplatform), Microsoft Notepad (Windows), Apple TextEdit (Mac), or any text editor.
