What is a PAT file?

A PAT file is a system file used by DiskStation Manager (DSM), the operating system used for Synology NAS devices. It contains files required to install or update the low-level operating system that runs the device.

PAT files are also used by Synology Assistant, a program used to install firmware onto DSM devices. During the DSM device setup process, Synology Assistant requests a PAT installation file for the device. You can use the PAT file located on your Synology installation CD or a PAT file downloaded from Synology Download Center.

How do I open a PAT file?

You can use a PAT file downloaded from Synology Download Center to manually update DiskStation Manager. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Open the DiskStation Manager Control Panel.
  2. Select Update & Restore → DSM Update → Manual DSM Update.
  3. Select the Browse button. Then, navigate to and select your PAT file.
  4. Select Apply to begin updating DiskStation Manager.

On SD models, the PAT files are located in the STYLE folder within the MASTER FOLDER, which is accessed when you push the MASTER FOLDER button on the keyboard. Depending on the keyboard version you are using you can load the PAT file via a floppy disk or USB drive. You can create a PAT file with the "Pattern Edit" function on SD models. On Aduya models, the PAT file is commonly accompanied by a .BIN file which contains the parameters for the style contained in the PAT file.

NOTE: You can open PAT files with Ketron software for the appropriate model of your keyboard.
