An RDF file is a file that stores the definition or structure of a report generated from a database or spreadsheet program, such as Oracle Reports or Microsoft Excel. RDF files do not contain raw data, only the specifications needed to create a report from the data stored in a database or spreadsheet.

An RDF file is a template saved in the Research Documents Information Format (ReDIF). It contains metadata that describes one or more research publications, such as journals, papers, books, and software. RDF files are used by Research Papers in Economics (RePEc), a group dedicated to enhance the dissemination of research in Economics and other related sciences. RePEc uses RDF and .REDIF files to store metadata about publications, which allows the publications to be more easily organized and accessed. RDF files are used to contain metadata with ISO-LATIN-1 or Windows-1252 character encoding, whereas REDIF files are used to store metadata with UTF-8 character encoding.

RDF files are typically created with ReDIF software but since they are stored in plain text can be opened and edited by any text editor. Metadata stored in the RDF file is organized into separate lines of field_name: field value. An example of a field name and value is Author-Workplace-Name: University of Minnesota.

An RDF file is a reaction data file saved in a format created by Molecular Design Limited (MDL). It contains the same molecule data as an .SDF file and, typically, additional reaction data. Computational chemists export RDF files from ISIS, REACCS, and other chemical databases, for use in chemical analysis programs.

Molecular Design Limited (also known as MDL Information Systems, before being acquired by Symyx in 2007) created several file formats that computational chemists use regularly. These include the SDF and RDF formats.
