A PTM file may also be an audio tracking module used by older music-tracking programs, such as PolyTracker, to create and store synthesized music. It contains a musical score and associated audio samples organized in tracks, which the software uses to play back the composed music. While once widely utilized by musicians and audio enthusiasts for composing music, the PTM format is considered deprecated and obsolete as modern software and formats have largely replaced it.

Musicians and hobbyists typically found PTM files on systems that supported tracker software in the late 1990s and early 2000s. You can open PTM files with Nullsoft Winamp in Windows. Impulse Tracker and CocoModX also support PTM files, but they are discontinued.

A PTM file may also be a patch file used to update TOTVS Protheus. It contains code used to fix a bug in the program or a security issue. System administrators can apply PTM files using the Totvs Developer Studio extension for Microsoft Visual Studio Code.

You can use the TOTVS Developer Studio extension for VS Code to apply the patch a PTM file contains to TOTVS Protheus. To do so, you must connect to the environment you want to update, right click on the Server icon, and select Patch Apply. Then, navigate to, select, and apply your PTM file.
