What is a PSM file?

A PSM file is a sheet metal file used by Siemens Solid Edge, a CAD application for designing and modeling sheet metal parts and assemblies in 3D. It contains a detailed 3D model specifically designed for manufacturing sheet metal components, including information on bends, flanges, and other features specific to sheet metal fabrication.

More Information

Engineers and designers typically use PSM files in engineering and manufacturing processes, as they provide precise dimensions and structures needed for creating metal parts with high accuracy. You can create PSM files with Solid Edge by using its sheet metal environment, where specific tools assist in creating the various bends and folds characteristic of sheet metal designs. After modifying the files, you can export them to different formats for further processing or sharing.

How to open a PSM file

You can open PSM files with Siemens Solid Edge. To open a PSM file with Solid Edge, select File → Open.

How to convert a PSM file

Siemens Solid Edge can convert PSM files to various file types, including the following formats:

  • .STEP - STEP 3D Model
  • .IGES - IGES Drawing
  • .X_T - Parasolid Model Part File
  • .X_B - Parasolid Model Part File
  • .DWG - AutoCAD Drawing
  • .STL - Stereolithography File
  • .PDF - Portable Document Format

A PSM file may also be an audio file used by the discontinued Protracker Studio, a tracker-based music sequencing program. It contains a collection of audio samples, note patterns, and sequencing data in the Protracker Studio Module (PSM) format, which defines how Protracker Studio plays back a song.

More Information

Lars Hamre and the Amiga Freelancers released Protracker Studio in 1990 for the Commodore Amiga, but they no longer develop the software. It was a popular tracker-based music sequencer in the demoscene that allowed musicians and programmers to create sample-based chiptune and module music. The PSM format stores songs composed with the software, supporting complex compositions with relatively small file sizes.

NOTE: There are different PSM (Protracker Studio Module) formats, which can cause compatibility issues between various tracker programs. The Epic MegaGames PSM variation was used in games developed by Epic MegaGames (now Epic Games) in the 1990s and differs from standard Protracker modules by including additional metadata and effects, making it incompatible with some standard tracker software.

How to open a PSM file

You can open PSM files with OpenMpt (Windows) and MilkyTracker (multiplatform). However, since PSM files may be saved in different variations of the PSM format, they may not support your variation of the PSM file.

MODPlug Player and CocoModX also support PSM files but they are discontinued.
