What is a PRJ file?

A PRJ file contains a project that may be created by a variety of different programs, such as Microsoft Visual Basic and Autodesk AutoCAD. It typically saves project data and settings and may include references to other files used by the project.

More Information

The .prj file extension is a generic project file extension, which means that it may be used by multiple programs to save project information. However, just because a program saves a project as a PRJ file does not mean that it can open PRJ files created by other programs.

There are a large number of programs that save projects with .prj extensions. If you encounter a PRJ file and you do not know which program created it, it may be difficult to find a program that can open it.

If you need to open a PRJ file in Windows you can right-click the file and select Properties or Open with to view possible programs that can open the file type. You can also choose Search the Microsoft Store in the Open with option in Windows 10 to look for other software options to open the unknown PRJ file type. If you need to open a PRJ file in macOS, you can right-click the file and select Get Info to view possible programs that can open the file type. Also, the following list of programs is a reference of possible file associations for PRJ files.

A PRJ file may also be a project created by dBASE, an IDE with database management capabilities. It contains plain text information about a project, such as settings and locations of files included in the project (e.g., forms, tables, queries, and bitmap images). Users typically open PRJ files with dBASE, but they may also view their contents with a text editor.

dBASE is a Windows program that provides various features for managing databases, building programs, and compiling them. When you develop an application with dBASE, you must create a project (File → New) that organizes the app's various components and then compile it into an executable (.EXE file).

In a project, you can configure an app build. For example, you can select its properties (e.g., set build options), instantly preview files via Project Explorer, and designate the app bitmap icon. After configuring your project, you can build it into an executable app by selecting Build → Compile.

dBASE saves PRJ files in the following directory, by default:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\dBASE\dBASE[version]\Bin

How to open a PRJ file

You can open PRJ files with dBASE in Windows. To open a PRJ file, select File → Open Project. You can also open a PRJ file via the Navigator (View → Navigator), click "Project," then double-click the PRJ file you want to open.

Since PRJ files are saved in plain text, you can also open them with a text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad (Windows) or Apple TextEdit (Mac). You may need to rename the .prj file extension to .txt for the text editor to recognize it.

When opened in a text editor, you can modify the PRJ file properties. However, if you incorrectly edit the file, you may inadvertently break the project.

A PRJ file may also be a project that contains information about an app or toolbox add-on created by The MathWorks MATLAB, a programming and numeric computing program for analyzing data, developing algorithms, and building models. It stores various information in an XML-like format, including project settings and files included with the app or toolbox as you package it for distribution. MATLAB users save projects as PRJ files and can close and reopen them, allowing them to resume where they previously ended.

MATLAB is specialized software with a numerical computing environment and dedicated programming language that engineers and scientists use in various fields, such as machine learning, robotics, and biological sciences. The software allows you to develop apps and toolbox add-ons to enhance the capabilities for your specific needs. As you package these tools for distribution, you can save your progress as projects (PRJ files).

For example, when packaging an app you developed, you will select Package App in the APPS tab, then describe your app by entering the app name, author, and description. You will also add the files that make up your app.

During this process, you can save the entered information as a PRJ file. This capability is helpful if you need to quit MATLAB before packaging the app into an .MLAPPINSTALL file, then reopen it to resume the process.

How to open a PRJ file

You can open a PRJ file with The MathWorks MATLAB. To open a PRJ file, select Open from the HOME tab. You can also PRJ files in MATLAB's app- and toolbox-packaging windows.
