What is an FXP file?
More Information
Virtual Studio Technology is an audio plug-in interface that allows Digital Audio Workstations to install audio effects. While Steinberg developed the VST interface, many DAWs, including Steinberg Cubase, Ableton Live, Image-Line FL Studio, and LMMS, use the interface to allow users to install plug-ins.
In the past, VST plug-ins loaded effects from FXB and FXP files. FXP files contained an individual instrument, audio effect, or MIDI effect. While many DAWs used FXP files, each FXP file was linked to a specific plug-in. So, the FXP file could be loaded only from within that plug-in.
With the release of VST 3, Steinberg replaced FXP and FXB files with .VSTPRESET files. However, some DAWs still allow users to load FXP files in their associated plug-ins.
How to open an FXP file
Steinberg Cubase, Ableton Live, Image-Line FL Studio, and LMMS all allow audio editors to import FXP files. Remember that, before you can import an FXP file, you must first install the plug-in with which the file is associated.
To import an FXP file in Steinberg Cubase:
- Select and load the plug-in your FXP file is associated with from the Earlier VST Plug-ins folder. Then, click the SoundFrame button.
- The Preset Management menu appears. Select Import FXB/FXP....
- Locate your FXP file and click Open.
How to convert an FXP file
To convert a plug-in's FXP files to VSTPRESET files in Steinberg Cubase:
- Open the Preset Management menu.
- Select Convert Program List To VST Presets.
The converted files will be stored in the VST 3 Preset folder.

An FXP file may also be a compiled program created by Microsoft Visual FoxPro, a database management system that evolved from FoxPro. It contains machine code compiled from source code in a .PRG file by a developer, which they can execute within the Visual FoxPro environment. FXP programs speed up the execution of database operations within Visual FoxPro and ensure the code is ready to run without recompiling it each time.
More Information
FXP programs are an essential component of Visual FoxPro. Developers commonly use them to manage databases, build tables, and execute complex queries. For example, developers can use the programs to process data, generate reports, and export results to different formats. This functionality is especially helpful in business environments in assisting data handling and reporting.
NOTE: The last version of Visual FoxPro was 9.0, which Microsoft published in 2007.
How to open an FXP file
You can open and run FXP files with Microsoft Visual FoxPro in Windows. However, the software is no longer developed.

An FXP file may also be a game data file used by Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, or San Andreas. It contains plain text describing the game's particle effects. The games' primary FXP file is named effects.fxp.
More Information
Particle effects are animations that simulate "fuzzy" physics using many tiny moving sprites. For example, a particle effect might simulate a fire or a snow storm.
GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas store most of their particle effects in effects.fxp. The effects are defined via a series of plain text entries, which begin with the line FX_SYSTEM_DATA:###. The data specified after this line controls how the particle effect behaves in-game, including what and how many particles it contains.
How to open an FXP file
You can open and edit an effects.fxp file in any text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad (Windows) or Apple TextEdit (Mac). You can also open the file in a dedicated effects.fxp editor, such as FXP Editor (Windows).
