What is an FXP file?

An FXP file is a preset used by audio-mixing applications that support Virtual Studio Technology (VST). It contains an individual audio effect that can be added to a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) via a VST plug-in. FXP files are related to .FXB files, which contain multiple presets.

More Information

Virtual Studio Technology is an audio plug-in interface that allows Digital Audio Workstations to install additional audio effects. While the VST interface was developed by Steinberg, many DAWs, including Steinberg Cubase, Ableton Live, Image-Line FL Studio, and LMMS, use the VST interface to allow users to install plug-ins.

In the past, VST plug-ins loaded effects from FXB and FXP files. FXP files contained an individual instrument, audio effect, or MIDI effect. While many DAWs used FXP files, each FXP file was linked to a specific plug-in. So, the FXP file could be loaded only from within that plug-in.

With the release of VST 3, Steinberg replaced FXP and FXB files with .VSTPRESET files. However, some DAWs still allow users to load FXP files in their associated plug-ins.

How do I open an FXP file?

Steinberg Cubase, Ableton Live, Image-Line FL Studio, and LMMS all allow audio editors to import FXP files. Keep in mind, however, that you must also install the plug-in an FXP file is associated with to use the FXP file.

To import an FXP file in Steinberg Cubase:

  1. Select and load the plug-in your FXP file is associated with from the Earlier VST Plug-ins folder. Then, click the SoundFrame button.
  2. The Preset Management menu appears. Select Import FXB/FXP....
  3. Locate your FXP file and click Open.

How do I convert an FXP file to a VSTPRESET file?

If you want to convert a plug-in's FXP files to VSTPRESET files, you can do in Steinberg Cubase by:

  1. Opening the Preset Management menu.
  2. Selecting Convert Program List To VST Presets.

The converted files will then be stored in the VST 3 Preset folder.
