What is an ISS file?

An ISS file is a script used by Inno Setup, a free program used to create Windows program installers. It contains a series of plain text commands that specify where and how a Windows program is installed. ISS files are compiled to create .EXE files.

Inno Setup is an InstallShield alternative that allows developers to create Windows installers. To create an installer, Inno Setup compiles the installer instructions an ISS script contains into an EXE file.

The instructions specified in an ISS script control all aspects of the related program's installation, including what files are installed and what folders the files are placed in. An ISS file may also include instructions that allow an installer to:

  • Check for prerequisite programs and platform requirements
  • Install or update Windows Registry entries
  • Create an uninstaller
  • Create a desktop shortcut and add a program to a user's Start menu
  • Start an application immediately after installing it

How do I compile an ISS script into a Windows installer?

To compile an ISS file into an EXE file, open the ISS file in Inno Setup and then select Build → Compile from Inno Setup's menu bar.

How to open an ISS file

You can open and edit an ISS file (Inno Setup Script) in Inno Setup (Windows). To open an ISS file in Inno Setup, select File → Open... from the program's menu bar. Then, navigate to and open your ISS file.

If necessary, you can also open and edit an ISS file in any text editor, including Microsoft Notepad (Windows), Apple TextEdit (Mac), or GitHub Atom (cross-platform).

An ISS file may also be an audio file used by The Longest Journey and other Funcom Oslo A/S video games. It contains music, sound effects, or dialogue that is played within a game. ISS files cannot be played by most popular media players, so if you want to play the files outside the game in which they are used, you must convert them to a standard audio format.

More Information

Funcom Oslo A/S is a Norwegian video game developer that was founded in 1993 and has produced over 50 games. The Longest Journey, which was produced in 1999, is one of Funcom's most popular and well-known games. It is a point-and-click puzzle-solving adventure game that follows the story of April Ryan, a struggling art student who must navigate between and save two parallel universes.

How to open an ISS file

Because ISS files are so uncommon, most popular media players cannot play them. However, you can convert ISS files to a usable audio format using FFmpeg and then play the converted file using a media player such as VLC media player.
