An ACD file is a project created by Studio 5000 Logix Designer, a programming environment used to configure and program Rockwell Automation’s Logix-based controllers, such as FlexLogix and SoftLogix5800. It contains the complete program logic, including ladder diagrams, function block diagrams, and structured text code, along with configuration data for hardware modules and network connections.

Engineers and technicians in industrial automation environments, such as manufacturing plants, processing facilities, and other automated systems, are the primary users of Studio 5000 Logix Designer and ACD files. Studio 5000 Logix Designer replaced RSLogix 5000, which also saved projects as ACD files.

Studio 5000 Logix Designer saves all the instructions and settings a controller requires to operate a system in an ACD file, including control sequences, timing functions, safety logic, and input/output mappings. When the project is complete, users transfer the ACD file to a controller, which then runs the instructions in real time to control industrial processes or machinery.

You can open ACD files with Rockwell Automation Studio 5000 Logix Designer. To open an ACD file, select File → Open.

Since ACD files are tied to specific Logix controller firmware versions, you may need the same or a compatible version of RSLogix/Studio 5000 that created the file. Also, incorrectly modifying ACD files can lead to equipment malfunctions or safety issues, so they are usually managed within a controlled engineering workflow.

An ACD file is a character definition file created by Microsoft Agent Character Editor. It contains metadata about a Microsoft Agent character, including a list of the frames, animations, audio, and other data that comprise the character. ACD files are used to create corresponding Microsoft Agent characters (typically saved as .ACS files).

Microsoft Agent is a discontinued program that allowed users to, among other things, create interactive animated characters that could be embedded in software and webpages. Users created these characters using the Microsoft Agent Character Editor.

In the Character Editor, users added and linked together frames that comprised their character's animation(s). They could also add audio the character would speak during its animation's final frame. If the user wanted to save a record of their character's composition, including its image, frames, animations, and other data, they could do so by selecting Save Character Definition. This saved the character's definition as a plain text ACD file.

Notably, ACD files do not themselves contain a character's image, animations, or audio. They contain only metadata used to load the character's image, animations, and audio in Microsoft Agent Character Editor. Therefore, you cannot extract a character's image, animations, or audio from an ACD file.

How do I use an ACD file to build a Microsoft Agent character?

In Microsoft Agent Character Editor, users can use an ACD file to build a character by selecting Build Character from the program's toolbar. This will create either an ACS or .ACF and .ACA file, depending on how you choose to build your character.

You can open and edit an ACD file in Microsoft Agent Character Editor (Windows). If you do not have access to Microsoft Agent Character Editor, you can instead open an ACD file in Microsoft Notepad (Windows), Apple TextEdit (Mac), or any other text editor, to view the plain text data it contains.
