You can open a VDI file in Oracle VM VirtualBox (cross-platform) as part of creating a new virtual machine. To do so:
- Place your VDI file in VirtualBox's HardDisks directory.
- Open VirtualBox and create a new virtual machine that uses the same operating system as your VDI file.
- When asked to provide a hard disk image, select Use existing hard disk. Then, select the folder icon.
- In the Virtual Media Manager window, select Add. Then, select your VDI file.
- Finish creating your virtual machine.
