A DM3 file is a gameplay recording created by id Software Quake III Arena. It contains footage a player recorded while playing Quake III. xsDM3 files are commonly referred to as Quake III demos.

Id Software released Quake III Arena in late 1999. This entry in the popular Quake series focused on online, multiplayer gameplay.

To allow players to review and study previous matches, Quake III included a recording function that players could use to record their gameplay. To begin recording, players entered the /record console command. To stop recording, they entered /stoprecord. In versions 1.11 to 1.17, Quake III saved the recordings players created as DM3 files.

Players could review and play the DM3 files they'd created using Quake III's Demos menu. They could also use the /demo console command to play a specific DM3 file.

注: Later versions of Quake III save demos as .dm_48, .dm_66, .dm_67, and .DM_68 files.

In Quake III Arena (multiplatform), you can play DM3 files from the Demos menu or using the /demo console command.

Outside Quake III, you can use wolfcamql (multiplatform), Seismovision (Windows), or Uber Demo Tools (multiplatform) to play the demo a DM3 file contains.

A DM3 file is a disk information file created by Diskette Manager 3, an MS-DOS disk cataloging program. It specifies a disk's name, description, file list, and related metadata. Diskette Manager 3 places a DM3 file on each disk you catalog using the program.

Diskette Manager 3 is a program that allows users to catalog all their diskettes and floppy disks, as well as those disks' contents, in a single database. The program also allows users to print adhesive labels that detail each cataloged disk's contents. Users can apply these labels to their disks to make searching for a specific disk easier.

When a user catalogs a disk using Diskette Manager 3, the program places a DM3 file on that disk. Each disk's DM3 file includes all that disk's cataloged information, including the disk's name, contents, comments, date cataloged, type, and bytes used.

Because DM3 files are plain text files, you can open and edit them in any text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad (Windows), Apple TextEdit (Mac), or GitHub Atom (multiplatform).
