An ADI file is a documentation index file used by Microsoft Dynamics AX, an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system developed by Microsoft. It stores an index of related .ADD files, which contain developer documentation. ADI files allow Dynamics AX to quickly locate and display relevant help content when a developer searches the documentation.

Developers and technical consultants working with Dynamics AX to customize business processes, create extensions, and support enterprise systems are the primary users who encounter ADI files. Because Dynamics AX includes extensive technical documentation for its development environment, the ADI index improves efficiency by speeding up search and navigation. Instead of scanning through multiple ADD files directly, the system references the ADI file to find the correct content more quickly.

NOTA: While Dynamics AX is no longer the latest ERP product from Microsoft, having been succeeded by Dynamics 365, developers in organizations that continue to use legacy versions of Dynamics AX may still encounter ADI and related files.

ADI files are not opened or edited manually by end users. Instead, they function in the background as part of the Microsoft Dynamics AX help system. Developers interact with them indirectly when searching or browsing documentation within the software’s integrated development environment (IDE).

An ADI file is a disk image created by Active@ Disk Image, a backup and recovery program. It contains a backup of a hard drive, media disc, or other external storage device. ADI files can be complete backups or part of a split archive.

ADI files are used for full system backups and restores as well as partial system backups. They store only the occupied sectors of a disk and are compressed, which helps reduce the files' size.

Active@ Disk Image names split archives using the backup name followed by the number in the sequence. For example, a two-file split archive for "MyBackup" would contain the files MyBackup1.adi and MyBackup2.adi.

You can open an ADI file in Active@ Disk Image Explorer (Windows). To do so, select File → Open Image... from the program's menu bar. Then, navigate to and open your ADI file.

An ADI file is a device-independent binary plotter file created by AutoCAD, a computer-aided design (CAD) application used to produce 2D and 3D technical drawings. You can open ADI files with Autodesk AutoCAD. To open an ADI file with AutoCAD, select File, choose Plot (or Plotter Manager, depending on your version), and then select Import or Open.

An ADI file is a data file saved in the Amateur Data Interchange Format (ADIF). It contains contact information in plain text that users can exchange between amateur radio logging programs. ADI files are primarily used to transfer logbooks, enabling amateur radio operators to share records of their contacts with other software or operators.

The Amateur Radio Service, a community of hobbyists who operate radio equipment for communication, experimentation, and personal enjoyment, widely use the ADIF format. The format was introduced in 1996 and has since become the standard for exchanging log data between different amateur radio programs. There are three specifications of ADIF, and while ADI files are compatible with all of them, ADX files, which are saved in XML format, are primarily used with the third specification.

You can open ADI files with various amateur radio logging programs, such as Ham Radio Deluxe and WriteLog. Since the files store plain text, you can also open them with a text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad or Apple TextEdit.
