What is an SKM file?
An SKM file contains material information used by Trimble SketchUp, a 3D modeling application. It is a Zip-compressed package that stores .XML texture property files and typically includes a thumbnail .PNG image and .JPG texture image. SketchUp users utilize materials saved in SKM files to layer 2D graphics on 3D models.
More Information
Trimble SketchUp is utilized in architecture, interior design, film, urban planning, video game design, and mechanical engineering industries. You can save your 3D designs in the SketchUp Document .SKP format and apply materials stored in SKM files, such as asphalt, concrete, wood, and carpet textures, to the designs.
SKM files come packaged with the software, and you can use them interchangeably in Windows and macOS. You can find SKM materials in the following directory in Windows:
C:Program Files\SketchUp\SketchUp [version]\Materials
In macOS, you can navigate to the folder storing the packaged SKM material files by following these steps:
- Navigate to the "SketchUp" app in your "Applications" folder.
- Right-click "SketchUp" and select "Show Package Contents.
- Navigate to Contents → Resources → Content → Materials.
How to open an SKM file
You can only open SKM files with Trimble SketchUp. To add an SKM file to use the material it stores, place the SKM file in the application's "Materials" folder. You will then be able to access it in the Materials window in SketchUp.
Since SKM files are Zip-compressed packages, you can also open them with an archive utility, such as Windows File Explorer or Apple Archive Utility. You may need to rename the .skm file extension to .zip for the compression utility to recognize it. After you extract its contents, you can view the XML, PNG, and JPG files that comprise the material.

The 3GPP file format is a multimedia container format based on the ISO media file format. It stores video streams as H.263 or H.264. and audio streams as AMR-WB, AMR-WB+, AMR-NB, HE-AAC v1, AAC-LC, or Enhanced aacPlus. The 3GPP file format is used mostly to save videos recorded on 3G mobile phones. SK Telecom developed a slightly-modified version of the 3GPP file format for use with their 3G phones.
How to open an SKM file
While SKM files are quite rare, you can likely play them using Microsoft Windows Media Player (Windows), Apple QuickTime Player (Mac), Gretech GOM Player (Windows), or VLC media player (cross-platform). Those programs can play 3GP and .K3G files, so they should be able to play SKM files.
