An MVI file may also be a video file saved in the Motion Pixels version 1 (MVI1) format developed by Sirius Publishing. It stores compressed video data in the MVI container, along with metadata about the video.

More Information

MVI files are very rare because they were primarily only used in the Treasure Quest scavenger hunt game, which was released in 1996. The files are used in the game to store video sequences referenced throughout gameplay.

The MVI1 format was superseded by the Motion Pixels version 2 (MVI2) format, which uses the .avi file extension. The MVI2 format is used to store home videos on MovieCD discs, which is a storage media released in 1996 by Sirius Publishing that was made obsolete by DVD discs.

How to open an MVI file

Since the MVI format is uncommon, there are few programs that support the format. Instead, you can convert MVI files to a more common video format with FFmpeg. After converting the file, you can play the converted file with a media player, such as Microsoft Windows Media Player, Apple QuickTime Player, or VLC media player.
