.AFD File Extension

An AFD file may also be part of a split archive created from an Advanced Forensics Format (.AFF) disk image that stores part of an archive from the disk image. It is a smaller segment that simplifies handling, especially on systems with file size limits, and is often used for easier storage on media with capacity restrictions, such as DVDs.

Users typically create AFD files as part of digital forensic investigations where disk images need to be preserved and examined. These files are beneficial in scenarios where the disk image size exceeds the 2GB limit found in some 32-bit filesystems, as AFD files allow for dividing the image into smaller parts. Digital forensics professionals and law enforcement agencies commonly use AFF to capture and analyze evidence without altering the original data.

AFD files, along with the primary .AFF file, are necessary to reconstruct the original disk image fully.
