Symbol file created and used by gEDA, a CAD suite used to design PCB layouts and electronic schematics; stores symbol data, which includes the gEDA/gaf format version and XY coordinates for lines, boxes, circles, arcs, text, and pins.

The SYM file format is similar to the .SCH file used by gEDA. They both store the format version, which is the first line in the file, and contain objects, with related data. Both SYM and SCH files are used by gEDA for creating the layout of electronic circuits.

File used by TatukGIS mapping software; saves a symbol, which is a shape or object that can be placed on the map and scaled according to the map system coordinates; used for marking boundaries and points of interest.
