While MO3 files are uncommon, those immersed in the music tracker scene may encounter them. Un4seen Developments created the MO3 file format to allow music tracker users to compress modules saved in the MOD format (and variants, such as .IT, .XM, .S3M, and .MTM).

Typically, music tracker users use the following encoders to compress MOD files (or other audio modules) into MO3 files:

• Rarewares LAME, to create MP3-compressed MO3 files
• OGGENC, to create Ogg Vorbis-compressed audio files

You can open an MO3 file with any of the following programs:

• XMPlay (Windows)
• OpenMPT (Windows)
• Media Player Classic (Windows)
• ZXTune (multiplatform)
• XimpleMod (Mac)

You can use OpenMPT to convert MO3 files to the following formats (and several others):

• .WAV - WAVE Audio
• .FLAC - Free Lossless Audio Codec
• .AU - Sun Audio
• .PCM - Pulse Code Modulation
• .OPUS - Opus Audio
• .OGG - Ogg Vorbis Audio
• .MP3 - MP3 Audio
