Merkaartor is a free OpenStreetMap (OSM) editor available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The program allows you to download map data, edit its content, and then upload the map data to your OSM account to share with other users.

The application lets you download custom map areas then alter them in a WYSIWYG editor. The Merkaartor interface consists of widgets, such as the Layers dock, Features dock, and Styles dock, that are readily available for your use. In the program, you can place nodes on your map, join or separate roads, define object properties, create areas of interaction, and apply styles to your map.

You can save any changes you made to your map project as a Merkaartor document with the .MDC file extension. You can also export your map data to .OSM, .GPX, .KML, .PDF, and .SVG files. In addition to its export capabilities, Merkaartor enables you to upload your map to your OSM account allowing you to contribute fixes and updates to the OpenStreetMap collaborative project.
