Software Overview

gEDA is an open source toolkit of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. The suite can be used for schematic capture, electrical circuit design, prototyping, simulation, and production.

The gEDA suite offers a variety of applications that enable you to perform different tasks, such as attribute management, bill of materials generation, and digital and analog simulation.

The collection of tools includes:

  • gEDA/gaf - Schematic capture and netlisting
  • gerbv - Gerber viewer
  • gnucap - Analog simulation
  • gspiceui - GUI front end for ngspice/gnucap
  • GTKWave - Digital waveform viewer
  • Icarus Verilog - Verilog simulator
  • ngspice - SPICE simulation
  • pcb - PCB layout design
  • wcalc - Transmission line and electromagnetic analysis

gEDA is mainly used to design layouts of printed circuit boards (PCB). The tools provided in gEDA let you create a PCB with up to 8 layers and an unlimited amount of nets and components. The toolkit also includes a Gerber viewer, which allows you to open PCB files, such as .GBR and .GBO, that are saved in the popular Gerber format.

gEDA is a useful collection of tools that allows you to design PCBs, perform simulations, and netlist into more than 20 net list formats. While gEDA does not have as many cutting edge features as other EDA packages, it is still a useful set of tools for OS X and Linux users.
