Software Overview

CELSYS Clip Studio Paint Pro is a 2D drawing tool used to draw manga (Japanese-style comic books and graphic novels), comic illustrations, and animations. The program is developed by CELSYS but distributed by Smith Micro and was formerly known as Manga Studio before it became Clip Studio Paint in 2015. Clip Studio Paint is available as Pro and EX, with the EX version featuring more capabilities than Pro but at a greater price.

Clip Studio Paint Pro supports a variety of image formats including JPEG, BMP, PNG, TIFF, and Targa. The program also supports Photoshop documents, IllustStudio documents, and ComicStudio page files, and features the Clip Studio and Clip Studio Paint formats for saving your compositions in an editable format. The application is backwards compatible with Manga Studio 4 EX and 4 Debut files, allowing you to import CPG and CST files.

The program provides a variety of pens, pencils, and brushes (including brush effects) to create your illustrations. It comes with advanced coloring capabilities that include preset colors and the ability to create custom color sets and blend colors. The program provides advanced text features enabling you to adjust the spacing of letters, words, and lines, and mix fonts. Other features include raster, vector, and correction layers, a vector toolkit to view the centerline of vectors for smoothing troubled areas, templates to save time on projects, and comic page panels that can be customized to comlement your artwork.

Clip Studio Paint Pro features an animation timeline for controlling display and timing adjustments of your animations. The program supports cel animation, also known as frame-by-frame animation, for animating characters or objects. When animating your scenes you can view several cels, or frames, at once with the onion skin display, which helps you determine how to adjust an image based on previous images in the sequence. After you finish your animations you can export them as sequential images, GIF files, or video.
