Apple developed the QuickTime File Format for use with now discontinued the QuickTime media framework. Each QTFF file can contain video, audio, and text data. For example, a QTFF file might contain a movie, the movie's audio track, and subtitles.

While most QTFF files are saved with the .mov or .qt extensions, some are saved as QTM files. You can open and play these files the same way you would MOV and QT files.

You can open a QTM file with Apple QuickTime Player (Mac) or VideoLAN VLC media player.

You can use VideoLAN VLC media player to convert a QTM file to the following video formats:

• .MP4 - MPEG-4 Video
• .WEBM - WebM Video
• .TS - Video Transport Stream
• .ASF - Advanced Systems Format
• .OGV - Ogg Video File

VLC media player can also convert the audio in QTM files to the following formats:

• .MP3 - MP3 Audio
• .OGG - Ogg Vorbis Audio
• .WAV - WAVE Audio
• .FLAC - Free Lossless Audio Codec
