An AUP4 file is an audio project created with version 4 of Audacity, a free, open-source audio editor and recorder. It contains the project's audio tracks, clips, edits, and other project information in Audacity's native, binary project format, allowing users to close a project and continue editing it later. AUP4 files replaced .AUP3 files, which Audacity 3 uses to save projects.

Audacity 4 uses the AUP4 format to preserve the information needed to continue editing a project. The AUP4 format is an SQLite database that organizes project information into several tables, including tables for the project, autosave data, and audio sample blocks. Audacity 4 also adds a project history table that stores information from recent previous saves. Compared to the AUP3 format, AUP4 supports additional information introduced in Audacity 4, including clip and appearance data and preview thumbnails.

You can open AUP4 files with Audacity (version 4 and later) on Windows, macOS, or Linux. To open an AUP4 file with Audacity, select File → Open. You can restore the AUP4 project and continue editing it. Since AUP4 uses a different project format from AUP3, Audacity 3 cannot open AUP4 files.
