ZSNES supports multiple numbered save slots, typically ranging from ZS0 through ZS99, allowing users to maintain several separate save points for the same game. The .zs0 extension indicates that the file belongs to save slot 0. Users can switch between save slots by pressing the F3 key and using the arrow keys to select a slot, or by choosing the Pick State option from the game menu.

A ZSNES save state differs from an in-game save in that an in-game save relies on the game's built-in save system and is usually limited to certain checkpoints or menu options. In contrast, a save state file, like ZS0, captures the full system state in a binary format, so the game can resume exactly where it was when the save state was created. ZSNES can also create save states at almost any point in gameplay.

You can open ZS0 files with ZSNES. To open a ZS0 file, place it in the appropriate save directory and use the emulator's Load State feature to resume gameplay. Other SNES emulators may support ZSNES save states, but compatibility is not guaranteed.
