A CAM file is a webcam recording created by MSN Messenger or aMSN. It contains video that was streamed using the apps' Webcam feature. CAM files are saved using Microsoft's proprietary ML20 video codec, and they are stored in messenger applications' webcam folders.

Released in 1999, MSN Messenger was a cross-platform instant messaging application that allowed users (especially high school and college students) to chat with each other over the Internet. In 2003, Microsoft added the ability to conduct video chats to MSN Messenger. A user could turn on their webcam and stream the video it recorded using Messenger's Webcam button. After the conversation ended, Messenger saved the user's streamed video as a CAM file so they could play it back later.

In 2005, Microsoft renamed MSN Messenger to Windows Live Messenger, and in 2013, Microsoft announced that they were retiring Messenger. In the interim, users developed several free, open-source alternatives to Messenger, such as aMSN. In 2017, Microsoft turned off their last Messenger server, and though some users have created their own servers to use with Messenger and its clones, most MSN Messenger users have moved on to other chat and video call programs.

Because CAM files are so uncommon, most popular media players cannot play them. However, you can play CAM files using VLC media player, and you can convert CAM files to a more usable video format using FFmpeg.
