A CAM file is a webcam recording created by MSN Messenger or aMSN. It contains video that was streamed using the apps' Webcam feature. CAM files are saved using Microsoft's proprietary ML20 video codec, and they are stored in messenger applications' webcam folders.

Released in 1999, MSN Messenger was a cross-platform instant messaging application that allowed users (especially high school and college students) to chat with each other over the Internet. In 2003, Microsoft added the ability to conduct video chats to MSN Messenger. A user could turn on their webcam and stream the video it recorded using Messenger's Webcam button. Because CAM files are so uncommon, most popular media players cannot play them. However, you can play CAM files using VLC media player, and you can convert CAM files to a more usable video format using FFmpeg.
