A NUT file is a text file that contains Squirrel code written in the Squirrel programming language. It is a script used as a plugin to extend functionality of a program and for scripted events in video games.

Squirrel is an object-oriented programming language similar to Lua, C++, and JavaScript. it is designed to be lightweight, fitting the memory, size, and real-time requirements of programs, mainly video games, such as Left 4 Dead 2, Simutrans, Shadow Warrior, SuperTux, and Portal 2.
Since there is another file type with the ".nut" extension, you can look at the file size for an indication of what type of NUT file you have. NUT files containing a Squirrel script rarely reach 1MB whereas NUT video files are larger than 1MB.

A NUT file is a texture file used by a Bandai Namco video game. It contains a skin that is applied to an in-game character, object, or level. NUT files are most notably used in Super Smash Bros. for WiiU and Nintendo 3DS.

Most 3D video game characters are comprised of a 3D model, texture, and animation files. The texture file serves as the character's "skin," providing the look of their skin, clothing, and other items. When you play a game, the game applies the character's texture file to their 3D model (usually saved as a wireframe skeleton), creating the character's in-game appearance. The same process is used to skin in-game items and levels.
Some Bandai Namco video games use texture files that are saved in the NUT file format. Because Super Smash Bros. 4 is the most popular game that uses NUT files, Super Smash Bros. 4 modders are most likely to encounter the files. However, other Bandai Namco games, such as Taiko no Tatsujin Tokumori, also use NUT files.
REMARQUE: The 3D models used with NUT files are saved in the .NUD format.

You can open NUT (Namco Universal Texture) files in Smash Forge, an open-source Super Smash Bros. 4 file editor and modding tool. To do so, select File → Open → Open File from the program's menu bar. Then, navigate to and open your NUT file.
