An MPX file is a data file exported by Microsoft Project, a project management application. It stores a project plan in an ASCII text format instead of the .MPP binary format. The purpose of MPX files is to exchange project data between different versions of Project and third-party programs.

Microsoft introduced Project in 1984, and it has since become an industry-leading program for managing projects big and small. For example, you may use Project to manage your home renovation or the moving parts of a corporate merger.

The software saves projects in the proprietary MPP format by default to store project information. Since not many applications support the MPP format, Microsoft developed the MPX format to make it easier for users to exchange project information with other apps.

Programs that can export MPX files

Microsoft Project can export MPX files along with several other third-party programs. For example, several programs utilize the MPXJ Java library to implement MPX export functionality.

You can open an MPX file with Microsoft Project in Windows by selecting File → Open.

Other third-party applications, such as MOOS Project Viewer (multiplatform), Seavus Project Viewer (Windows), and MPXJ (multiplatform), can also open MPX files.

Several applications, including Microsoft Project and MPXJ, can convert MPX files to other formats.

For example, Microsoft Project can convert MPX files to many file types, including the following formats when you select File → Save As:
