An SMM file stores a macro used by the Samna Ami Pro and Lotus Word Pro word processing applications. It contains a series of commands grouped to automate repetitive or complex functions, such as inserting a block of text or modifying an image, within the Ami Pro and Lotus Word Pro programs.

Samna Ami Pro is a Windows word processor released in the 1980s that allows you to compose documents, such as reports and essays. Along with editing tools, the software enables you to record functions as macros so you can quickly repeat the functions. When you save a macro, Ami Pro creates an SMM file to store the commands that comprise the macro.
In 1990, Lotus Software acquired Samna and later renamed Ami Pro as Word Pro. Lotus Word Pro also supports SMM macros, but IBM acquired Lotus Software in 1995 and eventually discontinued the software.
How to open an SMM file
You can open an SMM file with Samna Ami Pro and IBM Lotus Word Pro in Windows. However, both of these programs are discontinued.
