.SHX File Extension
File Type 1AutoCAD Compiled Shape File
What is an SHX file?
An SHX file contains a shape or font compiled by Autodesk AutoCAD from an .SHP shape file or .PFB font file. It stores shape definitions, as well as font definitions for displaying custom text. SHX files support many Type 1 PostScript fonts.
Compiled shapes enable users to save smaller building blocks and fonts that are frequently inserted in drawings. This allows users to save time and not have to re-create often-used shapes and fonts.
After a SHP shape file or PFB font file is compiled, the resulting SHX file can be inserted into a drawing. The user can then specify the location, scale, and rotation of the imported shape.
NOTE: Autodesk AutoCAD is a 2D and 3D design and engineering application.
File Type 2Motorola Flash Superfile
.SHX File Association 2
Encrypted file used to "flash" the firmware of a Motorola cell phone, such as as a Razr or Rokr; often used for customizing or "modding" the interface of Motorola cell phones.
To flash the memory of a cell phone, you must connect the phone to a PC via USB and run a program like PST or RSD, which can open the flash superfile.
SHX files are based on the .HS flex file format.
File Type 3Shapefile Index File
.SHX File Association 3
Index of ESRI Shapefiles (.SHP files) that stores index and offset information from the main Shapefile; allows for direct access to records in the main file; consists of a 100-byte header followed by 8-byte, fixed-length records that define the SHP files referenced by the index file; often saved along with a corresponding dBASE (.DBF) database file.
