An SGT file may also be a migration template used by ShareGate, an app used to migrate content to and from Microsoft 365 applications. It contains XML-formatted text that controls how content is moved, copied, and/or modified during the migration process. IT administrators may create and use SGT files when using ShareGate to migrate content.
More Information
Primarily, businesses use ShareGate to migrate existing content, such as Word documents, PDFs, images, and/or spreadsheets, into the cloud-based versions of Microsoft 365 applications. Businesses can also use ShareGate's migration features to, for example, move Teams channels and merge content from different SharePoint sites into one site.
While performing these migrations, IT administrators can create migration templates, which control various aspects of how content is migrated or merged. For example, an administrator could create a template that migrates only Microsoft Office documents created prior to 2019 and preserves all those documents' existing permissions.
These migration templates are saved as SGT files. Typically, IT administrators create SGT files using Microsoft Visual Studio Code or another text editor, just as they would any other .XML file. They then select the SGT file in ShareGate during the content migration process.
How to open an SGT file
You can open and edit an SGT file with Microsoft Visual Studio Code, Microsoft Notepad, Apple TextEdit, or any other text editor.
To use an SGT file with ShareGate, select the Template: dropdown from the Advanced Options screen during the content migration process. Then, select your SGT file.
