What is an SDX file?

An SDX file contains MIDI data "dumped" from a MIDI (.MID) file and compressed using the now-discontinued Simmons SDX, an advanced electronic drum system developed in the late 1980s. Simmons SDX users were primarily professional musicians who used the software and SDX files to create, manipulate, and exchange drum samples and other MIDI data.

More Information

SDX was a high-end drum system with sampling capabilities and extensive MIDI support. It included an internal hard disk drive and floppy disk drive, allowing users to store and share SDX files (the system also applied compression to the files to reduce their size).

An SDX file may also be a file used by Kivuto Solutions' Secure Download Manager (SDM), a program used for downloading files from web stores such as DreamSpark and OnTheHub. It saves information required to download the purchased item, but does not contain the actual purchased item itself.

More Information

An SDX file is downloaded from the web store when you purchase an item and click to download it. When the file is opened, SDM begins the download process for the purchased item.

Secure Download Manager integrates with web browsers on both Mac and Windows platforms. Depending on the browser you're using, SDM may or may not automatically open an SDX file after it's been downloaded. Therefore, you may need to remember the download location for your SDX file and then open it manually to download your purchase.

An SDX file may also be a user database file created by the Windows version of Star Finanz StarMoney, a banking management application. It stores data entered by a user, such as banking account information, address book entries, and transactions. SDX files are accompanied by .SDY database files, which make up the other part of the database.

More Information

Star Finanz is a company based in Germany and developed StarMoney to enable you to manage multiple financial accounts. The software utilizes SDX and SDY database files to store all of the data entered by the user.

The Windows desktop version of StarMoney saves SDX and SDY files in the following directory (beginning with StarMoney 7.0):

C:\ProgramData\StarMoney [version]\Profile

The "ProgramData" folder is hidden by default. You can set Windows File Explorer to show hidden files and folders by following the instructions in our Windows 8 and Windows 10 video tutorials.

How to open an SDX file

SDX files are not meant to be opened. Instead, the Windows version of Star Finanz StarMoney references the files to load the data they contain.
