What is a PDTXT file?
A PDTXT file is a modified Pure Data (.PD) patch file that improves accessibility for visually impaired users working with the Pure Data visual programming environment. It defines audio or multimedia programs using a visual programming structure, including accessible object labels, custom variable names, comments, and additional metadata to aid screen reader support and usability. It is the same as a .PD2 file, which users with older systems often use, as some older systems struggle to recognize file extensions with more than three characters.
More Information
PDTXT files are saved in a format similar to the original PD file structure, but they include improvements that enhance their readability and navigation without requiring visual cues. Some enhancements include support for accessible object descriptions, variable declarations, and structured comments explaining every patch element.
NOTE: Nando Penteado at the University of the State of São Paulo (Unicamp) in Brazil developed the modified Pd format.
How to open a PDTXT file
You can open PDTXT files with any text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad (Windows), Apple TextEdit (macOS), or gedit (Linux). You can also use source code editors, such as Microsoft Visual Studio Code (multiplatform).
