What is a PD2 file?
A PD2 file is a modified Pure Data (Pd) patch file that improves accessibility for visually impaired users working with the Pure Data visual programming environment. It is similar to a standard .PD patch file, defining audio or multimedia programs using a visual programming structure, but it includes enhancements such as custom variable names, comments, accessible object labels, and additional metadata to aid screen reader support and usability.
More Information
Nando Penteado at the University of the State of São Paulo (Unicamp) in Brazil developed the modified Pd format. PD2 files are based on the original PD file structure, but they incorporate modifications that enhance their readability and navigation without requiring visual cues. Some enhancements include support for variable declarations, accessible object descriptions, and structured comments that explain the purpose of each element in the patch.
NOTE: PD2 files may also be saved with the .pdtxt file extension (.PDTXT files).
How to open a PD2 file
You can open PD2 files with a text or source code editor. Some options include Microsoft Notepad (Windows), Apple TextEdit (macOS), and Microsoft Visual Studio Code (multiplatform).
