An MV file may also be a video file saved in the proprietary Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) video format. It stores compressed video data, along with metadata about the video, such as the height and width, compression utilized, and orientation.
More Information
MV files are rare since they primarily are used on the Indigo2 workstation developed by SGI, which was discontinued in 1997, and the IRIX operating system developed by SGI, which was discontinued in 2006. These SGI platforms included utilities for creating and playing MV videos.
You will most likely only encounter MV files if you have old videos from one of the aforementioned SGI platforms. You may also receive an MV video file from a former SGI system user looking to share an old video.
NOTE: MV files may also be saved with the .movie file extension.
How to open an MV file
Since MV files are uncommon, there are few programs that support the format outside of the utilities included with discontinued SGI systems.
However, you can convert MV files to a more common video format with FFmpeg and then play the converted file with a media player such as Microsoft Windows Media Player or VLC media player.
