What is an MPK file?
Packaged map file created by ArcMap, a GIS mapping program included with ESRI ArcGIS Desktop; stores both the .MXD file and all data for the map, even if the data is originally located at remote or disparate locations; used for saving a consolidated, self-contained map and sharing it with a user at a different location.
More Information
To create a map package, ArcMap first downloads all data and then combines it with the MXD file into the resulting MPK file. This is useful for viewing maps without having access to the data connections required to view the map contents.
To extract a MPK file, drag the file into ArcMap or right-click on the file and select "Unpack." By default, map packages are extracted to the \[user]\Documents\ArcGIS\Packages\ directory.
NOTE: MPK files were introduced with ArcGIS version 10 and are not compatible with earlier versions of the software.

Controller pak (MemPak) file for a Nintendo 64 emulator; stores data that can be loaded into the Project64 emulator, such as saved games or user settings; functions the same as a controller pak for the actual N64 console.
More Information
To load data from an MPK file, the file must selected using an input plugin such as Jabo's input plugin. The data will then be loaded automatically.

An MPK file may also be an app that can be installed on a Makino computer numerical control (CNC) machine. Makino CNC machines include some default MPK files. Users can download additional MPK files from Makino's website and app store, to install additional apps.
More Information
Makino is a Japanese company that produces CNC machining centers. These centers contain specialized applications that can be accessed and used from their control panels. The applications are packaged as MPK files.
Users can also create, distribute, and install custom MPK files. Typically, MPK files must receive official approval from Makino and are distributed via the Makino website and app store. Apps downloaded from the website or app store are installed on a device automatically. (Apps downloaded from other sources must be installed manually.)
How to open an MPK file
MPK files are not meant to be manually opened. MPK files you download from Makino's website or app store are automatically installed on your Makino CNC device.
