An MBX file may also be a 3D scene exported by Mecabricks, an online tool for LEGO enthusiasts to design scenes with LEGO bricks. It contains scene information in plain text, such as points, surfaces, positions, and textures of a model and background information. Typically, Mecabricks users will not encounter MBX files (since the program exports the scene in the compressed .ZMBX format) unless the web browser automatically decompresses the ZMBX file as a .ZIP archive when downloading the scene from the program, leaving the MBX file.
More Information
Nicolas Jarraud initially released Mecabricks in 2012, and he continually develops it, adding new features. Since its release, the app has become a favorite among LEGO enthusiasts.
They typically use the app to build, render, and animate LEGO scenes in the Mecabricks (MBX) format. Then, they may export the scenes as ZMBX files and import them into Blender to illustrate and animate them further.
Common MBX Filenames
scene.mbx - Default name Mecabricks gives to the scene when exporting it in a ZMBX file.
How to open an MBX file
You can open MBX files with Mecabricks in a web browser or with Blender in Windows, macOS, or Linux (with the Blender Lite plugin installed). However, you must compress the file as a Zip archive (e.g., right-click the file in Windows or macOS and select the Compress option from the context menu), then rename the .zip file extension as .zmbx for the programs to open it.
Since MBX files store information in plain text, you can also open them with a text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad (Windows) or Apple TextEdit (macOS). However, opening them with a text editor will not appear the same as opening them with Mecabricks or Blender.
How to convert an MBX file
If you compress an MBX file as a Zip archive, then rename the .zip file extension as .zmbx, Mecabricks and Blender (with the Blender Lite plugin) can convert the file to other 3D model formats. For example, you can convert ZMBX files to the following file types with Mecabricks by selecting File → Export:
