An INP file may also be an input file used by the Dassault Systemes Abaqus engineering simulation and analysis software suite. It contains plain text input data for a job that produces output visualizations (eg. Abaqus .ODB output databases) and other data. Users may create INP files with the Abaqus/CAE app included in the Abaqus suite or with a text editor.
More Information
Dr. David Hibbitt, Dr. Bengt Karlsson, and Dr. Paul Sorensen initially developed Abaqus (formerly ABAQUS) and released it in 1978. However, Dassault Systemes now develops the software, which is prevalent in various commercial and academic mechanical engineering industries, including aerospace and automotive.
INP files store information in two parts:
- Model data - Defines the mesh structure to be analyzed in Abaqus, which includes structure metadata, nodal coordinates, model definition, and materials.
- History data - Defines what happens to the structure (each step of loading or events) to create the data for analysis or visualization.
How to open an INP file
You can open an INP file with the Abaqus suite of applications in Windows or Linux. To open an INP file, select File → Import → Model.
Since the INP file stores plain text, you can also open them with any text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad (Windows) or Apple TextEdit (macOS). Additionally, Microsoft Visual Studio Code (multiplatform) provides helpful data-viewing and -editing capabilities.
