What is an HPS file?
Game script used by HPL, a Frictional Games game engine that is used for first-person horror games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Penumbra: Black Plague; saved in a plain text format and contains functions that define events that occur in a game map, such as doors slamming, scream sounds, or other horror events.
NOTE: HPS files can be edited by users to create custom storylines for HPL and HPL2 games.

An HPS file may also be an audio file used by a Nintendo GameCube video game, such as Super Smash Bros. Melee, FIFA World Cup, or Lost Kingdoms. It contains either music or a sound effect played in the game. HPS files are compressed using Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation (ADPCM).
Modders and other GameCube enthusiasts may encounter HPS files while examining or modifying a game's contents. For example, those attempting to replace or edit Super Smash Bros. Melee's music will encounter several HPS files in the game's audio directory.
While HPS files are saved in a proprietary audio format, some specialized video game audio players can play them. Thus, gamers also sometimes share HPS files online, so others can download them and play the audio they contain on their PCs.
How to open an HPS file
You can open an HPS file with vgmstream (multiplatform) or vgmstream-web (Web), to play the music or sound effect it contains.
