What is a G3 file?

A G3 file is a compressed, black-and-white image created by a fax machine. Various fax machines save images as G3 files before transmitting them to other fax machines. Compressing the images in this way makes them easier to transmit (by reducing their file sizes).

G3 files are saved in the CCITT Group 3 format, which is a losslessly-compressed format. CCITT Group 3 is sometimes also referred to as:
