What is a 005 file?
A 005 file is the fifth part of a split archive created by a file archiving or splitting utility. It is typically accompanied by files with sequential extensions, such as .001, .002, .003, and .004, and the archive may contain additional parts, such as .006 and .007. 005 files contain only part of the complete archive's data and generally cannot be opened or extracted on their own.
More Information
Users may divide large archives into smaller pieces to make them easier to store, transfer, or distribute. For example, splitting an archive can make it easier to upload or download when a service limits the size of individual files. When extracting the archive, an archive utility combines the numbered parts in sequence to reconstruct the original data.
You may encounter 005 files when downloading a large archive that has been divided into several downloads or when receiving files stored across multiple volumes. If you have a 005 file, look for the corresponding .001 through .004 files and any parts that follow [f].005. Keep all of the parts in the same folder and do not rename them, since the extraction program typically uses their sequential filenames to identify and combine the pieces in the correct order.
How to open a 005 file
You can open 005 files with several archive utilities, such as 7-Zip and Smith Micro StuffIt Deluxe. To extract a split archive with 7-Zip on Windows, make sure all parts of the archive are in the same folder, then start with the .001 file rather than the .005 file. Right-click the 001 file and select 7-Zip → Extract Here or another extraction option, and 7-Zip will read the subsequent parts as needed. Other archive utilities may use a similar process.
Since several programs can create sequentially numbered split files, not every 005 file uses the same underlying archive format. If an archive utility cannot extract the files, the split archive may have been created by an incompatible program, or one or more of its parts may be missing, damaged, or incorrectly named.
