An RTE file contains a navigation route used by various GPS navigation systems, including Navigon Mobile Navigator, to guide users from one location to another. It stores route data, including starting points, destinations, and waypoints along the path, and may also store additional metadata, such as estimated travel times or alternate routes.

RTE files were once commonly used to store navigation routes. They allowed GPS devices and software to provide step-by-step directions, helping users follow a specific path. Because of their popularity, many navigation apps and mapping tools created or exported them.

However, advancements in GPS technology and navigation software have led to the rise of more versatile formats, such as the GPS Exchange (.GPX) format, and the subsequent fall of the RTE format. Also, modern GPS apps and devices typically use cloud-based services or integrated mapping solutions to store and share routes, which has reduced the need for standalone route files.

You can open RTE files with various GPS apps, including GPSBabel. Navigon Mobile Navigator, Fugawi Global Navigator, and Garmin MapSource can also open RTE files, but these options are discontinued.

You can convert RTE files to the GPS Exchange (.GPX) format with GPSBabel, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Project template created with Revit, a 3D building design program; contains building information modeling (BIM) information and is used for creating multiple project (.RVT) files with a similar layout.

NOTE: Since RTE files are templates, you cannot overwrite them. Therefore, Revit will prompt you to enter a new filename and location when you save an RTE file.
