Software Overview
TuxGuitar is a free score editor used primarily by guitarists, to create or transcribe guitar scores and accompanying tablature. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Like other tab editors, TuxGuitar allows composers to insert notes and chords that map to corresponding guitar tabs. The resulting sheet music thus includes both notes and tabs.
Composers can add multiple tracks to their TuxGuitar scores (.TG files), to chart notes and tablature for additional guitars or other instruments. They can also use TuxGuitar's playback features to listen to the score they've created, allowing them to check the score for errors or play along with the score (at various speeds).
TuxGuitar can import several common types of guitar tab files, including GuitarPro tabs, PowerTab tabs, and TablEdit tabs, and it can import scores saved as MIDI files. It can export scores in many common document, score, and audio formats, including .PDF, .MUSICXML, .TAB, .MID, and .WAV.
Summary
Many guitarists enjoy using TuxGuitar to chart and learn songs. While TuxGuitar is not as comprehensive as some other tab editors (especially commercial programs like GuitarPro), it is free and relatively easy to learn. Thus, if you're looking for an inexpensive way to compose or transcribe guitar scores, TuxGuitar may fit the bill.
