An SCM file is a source code file written in Scheme, a programming language developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). SCM files can be edited with any text editor, but they are best modified using an editor that supports Scheme syntax highlighting.

Scheme is part of the Lisp family of programming languages. It is most often used in academic environments for teaching functional programming concepts.
