An ASH file stores data in a compact, binary format known as the AshFile format. It contains pockets of information called camps, where each camp has a name and a value. The value can be many things, for example, the camp might be named "price" and the value may be 8000.

The AshFile format was designed to be a practical solution for software projects, partially due to its efficiency and flexibility, which is useful for storing structured application data. The data is a collection of unordered key-value pairs, where each key is a name and each value can be a number, text, boolean, color, or even an array of these types. While the format is not yet widely adopted, it provides a compact, adaptable way to store information that can be easily integrated into different programs.

ASH files are not meant to be opened. Instead, applications reference the files to load the data they store.

However, you can create, read, and modify ASH files with siljamdev AshFile Editor, which provides a command-line interface where you type commands to create, modify, save, and export ASH files.

Script used by KoLmafia, a program used for automating tasks in the online role-playing game Kingdom of Loathing (KoL); often contains instructions for executing basic, repetitive tasks in the game, such as learning skills or leveling up the character; supports instructions supported by the KoL command-line interface (CLI).

The ASH scripting format supports basic logic structures and data types.

Audio data file created by Audiosurf, a game where players race through levels that are constructed on-the-fly by the user's music files; saves information about the user's song processed by the game; includes the generated ride, the length, and other ride information.

ASH files can be shared with other players so that multiple people can compete from the same ride.

NOTA: Audiosurf creates ASH filenames by appending ".ash" to the original song's filename. For example, an .MP3 file named song.mp3 would have an ASH file named song.mp3.ash.
